Workshops of Culture

In this year festival artists of Black Market International took part:  Norbert Klassen (Switzerland), Jürgen Fritz (Germany), Myriam Laplante (Canada/Italy), Jason Lim (Singapore), Alastair MacLennan (Great Britain), Helge Meyer (Germany), Boris Nieslony (Germany), Jacques van Poppel (Holland), Elvira Santamaria (Mexico), Julie Andrée T (Canada), Marco Teubner (Germany, Roi Vaara (Finland), Wen Lee (Singapore). They also did a group performance.

Black Market International is a kind of phenomenon. It is the only performance art group, members of which work not only as a collective, but they also work successfully as individual artists. Their activity is in the form of open actions, in which fundamental is openness for interactions between artists. Each person contributes to activity in his/her individual way, introduces ideas, bringing impulses, which open the way for understanding or confrontation. Performances of BMI in Poland will be a part of international tour of the group on the 25 years anniversary of the work. For the first time the group will perform in Lublin and Warsaw.

Jason Lim   Duet with Still/Life

artist-in-residence: exhibition, performance, lecture, ceramic and performance workshops

Jason Lim (b. 1966, Singapore) is engaged in ceramics, video, instalations and performance. Frequently cooperated with Black Market International. Took part in many international festivals and exhibitions, in 2007 participated in Venice Biennial. Jason Lim's works are deep-rooted in nature and culture of the East. Their fundamental features are aesthetic simplicity and repeatability of the form. The artist works mainly with clay, which offers infinite possibilities for creation, but the same is easy to destroy. Lim brings out that proccess by creating ceramic forms, which are everything that is yet to come, that already is, that will never be, that is in Singapore and not there and that is in his body when he performs. During his residence in Lublin Jason Lim will do an exhibition and run ceramic and performance art workshops.

Alevtina Kakhidze

In little places any corner can be seen as public

In her work Alevtina Kakhidze brings up issues relevant to popular culture, consumption and life style. The main field of her interest are objects, things, which, irrespective of where they were made, what price they cost and what is their function, have great power of seduction. Whether it is an Alvaro Alto’s lamp or a lamp from Ikea, they both engender emotions or even feelings, which for Kakhidze are the constant source of inspiration. The work “In little places any corner can be seen as public”, similarly to her previous works, is based on things and their images and relates to consumer’s imagination and desires.

Alevtina Kakhidze – Ukrainian artist, former resident of A-I-R program in the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. Exhibited in: IASPIS in Stockholm, Centre for Contemporary Art in Kiev, National Museum in Moscow and Nicolaj Art Center in Copenhagen. Runs independent artist-in-residence program in her house in Muzychi near Kiev.

Iza Tarasewicz   Frame

It is an exhibition about what isn’t, what one cannot see. About a body, which left a mark in a form of frames without contents. There are various kinds of frames: solid and delicate. Hard and soft. Simple and rich. Some of them stand on their own, others need backup. There is a dialogue between certain elements. The whole consists of parts dependent of each other. These are puzzles related with each other through subtle meanings. This is a statue for transitory body. (an excerpt from the technical description for the exhibition “FRAME”).

Iza Tarasewicz (b. 1981, Bialystok) sculptor, drawer, performer. Graduated from Department of Sculpture and Spatial Works of Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. Memeber of art group Penerstwo, awarded this year with “Warrants of Culture” Award by TVP Culture. Run series of workshops „What divides us brings us together” with Polish, Chechnyan, Georgia children. Nominated for “Passports of Politics” Award 2008 as the most interesting debut.

Curator: Magdalena Linkowska

He Chengyao & Elżbieta Jabłońska - Trying to talk with each other

Two individual exhibitions of two artists leading in their fields, presented side by side. What links them is similar means of expression, attitude and understanding of a purpose of artistic activity, what differs is cultural background. They are almost the same generation and both experienced living under the totalitarian systems, though in Jablonska’s case it was the time, when The People’s Republic of Poland was already ending its existence. In their work He Chengyao as well as Elzbieta Jablonska refer to their private life and think of it as a therapy. They are interested in surrounding world, people, but see them not in terms of socio-political phenomena, but as individuals with their own inner life. The exhibition will present authors’ selection of the most representative works commenting each other. It will become a kind of experiment-meeting, from which new values may emerge.

He Chengyao (b. 1964, Sichuan/China) graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in Chongqing. One of the most recognized Chinese artists specializing in performance. Lives and works in Beijing.

Elzbieta Jablonska (b. 1970, Olsztyn) one of the most recognized artists in Polish art scene, who made their debut after 1989. In her work introduces a positive attitude, alternative to the critical art. Lives near Bydgoszcz, works in Torun.
